Background
Hakugen Sugita was born in 1763. He was the second son of Seian Tatebe, physician of the Ichinoseki Clan (Iwate Prefecture).

Hakugen Sugita was born in 1763. He was the second son of Seian Tatebe, physician of the Ichinoseki Clan (Iwate Prefecture).
He became a disciple of Gempaku Sugita and was adopted as his heir.
He presented to the Shogunate a Dutch geography book and its Japanese translation and was rewarded·with 20 silver coins (1805). With the money, he published Keiei Yawa (An Evening Talk on the Figure and the Shadow) written by Gempaku.
