Hakuzan Kanda was born in Edo (now Tokyo).
Desirous of taking up the profession he became a disciple of Hakuzan I, and after 13 years succeeded his master to become Hakuzan II, in spite of rivalry among other senior disciples. He was deeply influenced by his father,a keeper of a stable, who was an able storyteller also.
Hakuzan Kanda was the most proficient story-teller of his time, his favorite tales being "Ten-ichibo", "Suikoden" (Chinese novel of robbers) and "Denkichi Echigo".
