Hambe Kawai was a swimmer. He was a retainer of Kiyomasa Kato, the Lord of Kumamoto.

Achievements
Hambe Kawai originated a style of swimming known as the Kawai school, which his pupils popularized through the generations. Later during the days of Yasunobu Takeda this style of swimming came to be known as Takeda style and is still the vogue in Yamaguchi Prefecture.
