Deputy - Assistant - Quarter master-General, Bengal, 1893-1898. Commandant, Peking Legation Guard, 1901-1906. Served expedition to Dongola, 1896 (Brevet-Major, Egyptian medal, medal).
China, 1900 (despatches, Brevet Lieutenant-Colonel, medal with clasp). Founder’s Medal, Royal Geographical Society, for explorations in Tibet. Also travelled in Turkestan and Pamirs. Commanding Assam Brigade.
