Boutayeb may be best known for a deed of chicanery. In the 1992 Olympics 10,000 Meter Final, Boutayeb was lapped with 3 laps to go in the race, yet he proceeded to join the lead pack of Richard Chelimo and Khalid Skah in a very interfering and intrusive manner. He was apparently trying to help his countryman, Skah.
Skah beat Chelimo by 1.02 seconds, but was disqualified for receiving undue assistance from Boutayeb.
Skah was later reinstated on a technicality.
