Lüsebrink was born on April 22, 1952 in Lüdenscheid, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany; the son of Hans and Käthe (Belz) Lüsebrink.
Lüsebrink studied at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz from 1971 to 1977. Also he studied at the University of Tours from 1973 to 1974. In 1981, Hans-Jürgen was given a Ph.D. in Romance Philology from the University of Bayreuth. Three years later he earned his Ph.D. in History from the same university.
Lüsebrink began his career as an assistant professor of romance literatures and comparative literature at the University of Bayreuth in 1979. Two years later he took a position of an associate professor at that university. Then in 1988, Hans-Jürgen was appointed a professor of romance literatures and comparative literature at the University of Passau. Since 1993 he has been a professor and chairman of Romance Cultural Studies and Intercultural Communication Deaprtment at the Saarland University.
Lüsebrink is a member of the International Selection Committee of the Institut Universitaire de France.
On May 26, 1979 Hans-Jürgen Lüsebrink married Claire Ratelle. They have a child.
