Hans Beck graduated from Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg in 1997 with a thesis entitled Polis und Koinon.

He is now employed as Professor in the Department of History and Classical Studies at McGill University in Montreal, holding the John MacNaughton Chair of Classics and serving as Director of Classical Studies within the Faculty of Arts.
Beck is a specialist in classical Greece and the Roman Republic. He focuses on governments and federations in Greece, the political culture of Rome, the ancient aristocracy and historiography.
Between 1998 and 2002 he contributed more than 80 articles for the New Pauly, mainly in Greek history, prosopography and geography, including several major subject articles He is editor of the Göttinger Forum für Altertumswissenschaft.
