Diebner received a diploma in physics from the University of Tübingen in 1994. Four years later he was given a Doctor of Natural Sciences degree from the same university.
Diebner began his career as a research assistant at the Institute of Physical and Theoretical Chemistry of the University of Tübingen in 1993. Three years later he took a position of a researcher at the Institute for Clinical Epidemiology and Applied Biometry of the same university. Then in 1999, Hans became a director at the Institute for Basic Research of Center for Art and Media, where he worked until 2005.
He served as a lecturer at the University of Graz from 2004 to 2011. In 2006, Hans was appointed a researcher at the Institute for New Media and had held it for ten years. Since 2013 he has been a senior researcher at the Institute for Medical Informatics and Biometry of the TU Dresden.
