Hans Gollnic was educated locally.
After serving as an officer in WWI and remaining in uniform he rose from Oberst- leutnant (1 Apr 1936) to full colonel (1 Oct 1938). As a Generalmajor (1 June 1941) he was awarded the RK on 21 Nov 42 while commanding the 36th Pz Grenadier Div in the Ukraine. Promoted to Generalleutnanl on 1 Jan 1943, taking command of the 46lh Pz Corps on 5 Aug 1943 and being awarded the Oakleaves about three weeks later. He led this corps in the general withdrawal through Svin, Chernigov, and Lyubcch toward Mozyr. Promoted on 1 Oct 1943, General of Infantry Gollnick commanded the 28th Army Corps from 22 Mar 1944 to the end of the war.
