Hans Hinterreiter attended primary school and high school.
In 1920-1921 he began studying mathematics at the University of Zurich, then changed for the architecture department of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. He also took lessons in music and painting.
Hinterreiter received his Diploma in Architecture at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in 1925.
Hinterreiter created geometric compositions based on mathematical illustrations.
In his study trip to Spain in 1934 he was impressed with the strong Moorish ornamentation of the Alhambra. Attracted by the favorable conditions of life, Hinterreiter decided to settle on the island of Ibiza. But in 1936 because of the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, he was forced to return to Switzerland. After the death of his wife, Hinterreiter returned to Ibiza. Nevertheless, in 1942 and 1947 he exhibited with the artist group Allianz,
Hans Hinterreiter shifted again to the painting and its theoretical conception in 1963. At the same time he began to deal with new technical reproduction processes, with the help of the computer.
Besides, he authored the art theoretical writings, such as "Geometric Beauty" (1958) and "The Art of Pure Form" (1978).
Hans Hinterreiter died on September 15, 1989, at the age of 87, in Ibiza, Spain.
As a painter Hinterreiter belonged to the Zurich School of Concretism.
Hans Hinterreiter married Mina Salm in 1929, but later they separated. In 1963 he married Inge Carlo.
