This book is designed for two purposes; to serve as a text for meteorology students, and to acquaint active forecasters and research personnel with modern statistical techniques. Since no statistical background is expected of the reader, the first part of the book is devoted to "classical" statistics, presented in a somewhat abbreviated form. In some of the later chapters, topics are discussed which cannot be expected to be applied directly by individual forecasters inthe the field. In such cases, emphasis is placed not so much on details of procedure as on an explanation of the meaning of the techniques, and of the assumptions on which the techniques are based.
