Commissioned Second lieutenant 22d Infantry, 1891, advanced through grades to colonel (temporary), 1917. Brig.-general to major general National Army, 1918, brigadier general to major general United States Army.

Served in Montana, North Dakota and Nebraska, 1891-1897. Clubs: Army and Navy (Washington and Manila).
