He graduated from the Physics Section of Tokyo University in 1887.
He studied in Germany (1893-96) and became professor at his alma mater. Was made a member of the Imperial Academy (1905) and a member of the Physical Research Institute (1917). Was appointed first president of Osaka University (1931). Studied especially magnetism, geophysics and mathematical theory of electric induction. His research in atomic models is said to have preceded that of Sir Joseph John Thomson. Also contributed much to experimental research in atomic spectra.
