Hanto Yamagata

Background

Hanto Yamagata (real name: Koemon Hasegawa) was born in 1748, in Japan. He proceeded to Osaka as a child and was apprenticed to the exchange brokers Kochi-ya.

Education

Hanto Yamagata studied Confucianism under the famous brothers Chikuzan and Riken Nakai, and astronomy under Goritsu Asada. Also studied Dutch science.

Career

Hanto Yamagata set up his own business of exchange-broking and became prosperous. After 19 years of labor completed his hook Yume-no Yo (The World of Dream). In this and Daichiben (The Great Knowledge and Wisdom), which he presented to the Shogunate.

Achievements

• He was ranked with Naokata Kusama of the same period as one of the two chonin (towns-man) scholars of Osaka.

Personality

Hanto Yamagata was fond of learning from childhood and deeply interested in economics.
