Hanto Yamagata studied Confucianism under the famous brothers Chikuzan and Riken Nakai, and astronomy under Goritsu Asada. Also studied Dutch science.
Hanto Yamagata set up his own business of exchange-broking and became prosperous. After 19 years of labor completed his hook Yume-no Yo (The World of Dream). In this and Daichiben (The Great Knowledge and Wisdom), which he presented to the Shogunate.
Hanto Yamagata was fond of learning from childhood and deeply interested in economics.
