Hara Katsuro graduated from the History Course, Tokyo Imperial University in 1896 and was appointed professor at the First Higher School. He was sent to England and the United States for study in 1906.
In 1909 he became an appointed professor at Kyoto University. Although his "History of Medieval Japan" was well-known, his speciality was modern Western history. He toured Europe and the United States in 1919. He became dean of the School of Literature, Kyoto University in 1922.
