Career
After being selected twice in the National Hockey League Entry Draft, Vītoliņš played eight games in the National Hockey League with the Winnipeg Jets during the 1993-1994 season, going scoreless. Vītoliņš was promoted to head coach of Dynamo Moscow after Oleg Znarok was named as Zinetula Bilyaletdinov"s successor team Russia head-coach. Vītoliņš also serves as assistant of Oleg Znaroks.
On 25th May 2014, Vītoliņš took Znarok"s place as the head coach.
This was the first time team Russia had a foreign head coach.
