Chestnut went on a scholarship to Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1934 to study chemical engineering. In 1939 Chestnut got a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering and in 1940 - a Master of Science - from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Later he received two honorary doctorates in engineering: in 1966 from Case Institute of Technology, and in 1972 from Villanova University.
Chestnut started a lifelong career with the General Electric Company in 1940, which would last until his retirement in 1983. Chestnut worked at the Aeronautics and Ordnance Department and the Systems Engineering and Analysis branch of the Advanced Technology Laboratory, where he held the position of a manager from 1956 to 1972.
In 1957 he became the first president of the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC), serving there till 1959. After his term as president, he chaired the technical board for 5 years from 1961 and the Systems Engineering technical committee for another three years.
He worked as a manager Research in the Development Center from 1966 to 1971.
He also served as an honorary editor from 1969 to 1972 and was the first adviser appointed for life in 1984. In the 1980s and 1990s, after retirement, he created the "Supplemental Ways of Improving International Stability (SWIIS) Foundation" to identify and implement "supplemental ways to improve international stability".

Chestnut was a fellow of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Association for the Advancement of Science, Instrument Society of America. Also he was a member of National Academy of Engineering, International Federation Automatic Control, World Federalists Association, American Automatic Control Council, National Society Professional Engineers, First Unitarian Society, Sigma Xi, Tau Beta Pi and Eta Kappa Nu.
Chestnut married Erma Ruth Callaway on August 24, 1944, they had 3 children - Peter Callaway, Harold Thomas and Andrew Trammell.
