Evans arrived in Cairo, Egypt on May 23, 1948, but due to his Quaker religious principles he would not travel with a British military escort from Cairo to Jerusalem. He eventually arrived in Jerusalem in early June, but abruptly resigned his position afterward. A graduate of Haverford College, Evans was long associated with the American Friends Service Committee.
He was co-counsel before the Supreme Court of the United States in 1943 on behalf of Gordon Hirabayashi, in Hirabayashi v.
United States, one of the test cases challenging the curfew and internment laws imposed on Japanese residents of the United States. and Japanese-Americans in the Western states during World World War World War II The Supreme Court ruled against Evans"s arguments, in a decision which is now considered one of the Court"s most disreputable.
