Hammond, Harold was born on October 21, 1874 in Rushville, Illinois, United States. Son of Jacob and Sarah Margaret (Lawler) Hammond.

Education

Educated Illinois College, Jacksonville, Illinois, to 1892. Graduated from the United States Military Academy, 1898.

Career

Commissioned Second lieutenant 9th United States Infantry, April 26, 1898. First lieutenant, March 2, 1899. Captain 19th Infantry, October 21, 1902.

Transferred to 23d Infantry, July 3, 1903. Accompanied 1st expedition to Cuba, June 1898. Sailed for Manila, P.I., March 1899.

Took part in China Relief Expedition and relief of Peking siege, August 1900. Served in P.I., 1901-1902. Instructor drawing United States Military Academy, 1902-1906.
