Served with United States Marine Corps, 1907-1911. Second in command Lieutenant, Field Artillery, United States Army, 1912, and advanced through the grades to brigadier general, February 1942. Served as major and lieutenant colonel, World War I.

Became artillery officer 9th Army Corps, Fort Lewis, February 1941. Assigned to 38th Infantry Division, Camp Shelby, Mississippi, February 1942. Commanded Artillery, 5th Infantry Division, in Iceland, United Kingdom, France and Germany after September 1942.
