Joined Mr. Joseph Thomson’s exploring expedition to the Atlas Mountains, and with that traveller traversed the interior of Southern and Northern Morocco, crossed the mountains in these districts, not before entered by Europeans, and reached the summit of Tizi Likuinpt, 15,000 feet high, 1888.
On the recall of Mr.
Thomson to England to take charge of an Emin Pasha relief expedition then contemplated, he remained in sole charge of the expedition for three months. Received commission in Bechuanaland Border Police, 1890. Served in South Africa for four years.
While on an expedition in Matabeleland in 1892, was taken prisoner by a Matabele impi and carried to Buluwayo, where he was hospitably entertained by Lobengula.
Served South Africa, 1900-1902 (Queen's South African medal with three clasps, King’s South African medal with two clasps). Freedom of the Borough of Dumfries, 1902. Justice of the Peace Herefordshire and Dumfriesshire.
