Veilleuses (pronounced vay-euz) is a reference study of thirty years of research and travels by a leading collector of veilleuses. The word Veilleuses derives from the French veiller, 'to keep a night vigil.' It originally referred to any night lamp, but soon came to be applied to warmers for food or drink intended for bedside use. Although conceived for a utilitarian purpose, the decorative modeling and coloring soon established these pieces as attractive and prized ornaments. In this book Harold Newman has gathered together examples of all types of veilleuses, from those made of the finest decorated porcelain to others made of faience, creamware, and glazed pottery-even two of English silverware. The many different styles of design and decoration are fully described, including polychrome enameling, gilding, ornate openwork, low-relief applied figures, and lithophane plaques. This work discusses the manufacture and characteristics of veilleuses in England, France, Germany, Italy, Austria, Russia, Bohemia, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Belgium, Holland, Sweden, Portugal, Spain, and the United States. It contains nearly 300 illustrations and each photograph is accompanied by a detailed account of the warmer, where and when it was made (if known), and its location of the time of publication.
