Henry Thacker Burleigh was born in Erie, Pennsylvania, the son of Henry Thacker and Elizabeth Burleigh.
He obtained a scholarship at the National Conservatory of Music in New York, where he studied harmony and counterpoint.
Burleigh played double bass and timpani in the Conservatory Orchestra and became its librarian. In 1892, St. George's Episcopal Church, in New York City, chose him baritone soloist. His first solo there was Fauré's The Palms, on Palm Sunday, 1895, which he later sang for 52 consecutive Palm Sundays. In 1900, Burleigh commenced 25 years' service in the choir of Temple Emanu-El, New York, one of the nation's largest synagogues. He was the first black member of that choir. He made several concert tours of the United States and Europe, singing before numerous notables. Burleigh pioneered in introducing spirituals to the concert stage, publishing black folk songs, and arranging them for singing with accompaniment. He arranged more than 100 spirituals, including Deep River and Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen. He composed more than 250 songs, mostly semiclassical ballads. Burleigh died in Stamford, Connecticut, September 12, 1949.
