( About the Book The family saga chronicles the lives of ...)
About the Book The family saga chronicles the lives of a family, or several related or interconnected families, over an extended period of time. This may be in a novel or a sequences of novels with a serious theme, and is set against the background of historical events, changes of social circumstances, or the rise and fall of fortunes. The typical family saga follows a family through several generations in a series of novels. Also in this Book Our offering includes memoirs, or collections of memories that individuals have written about moments or events, both public or private, that took place in their lives. While the assertions made in these works are generally taken to be factual, the biases or perspectives of the authors are often present. Historically, memoirs have been defined as a subcategory of biography or autobiography, however the genre is differentiated in form, since it presents a narrower focus. While a biography or autobiography tells the story "of a life", a memoir generally tells the story "from a life", tending to emphasize touchstone events and turning points in the author's life experience. The authors are referred to as memoirists or memorialists. About us Leopold Classic Library has the goal of making available to readers the classic books that have been out of print for decades. This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

(Excerpt from A Memoir of the Late Rev. William Croswell, ...)
Excerpt from A Memoir of the Late Rev. William Croswell, D. D., Rector of the Church of the Advent, Boston, Massachusetts This is acknowledged to be an Office of great delicacy, on ac count Of the close relationship Of the parties; but the difficulty in the case is very much diminished by the fact, that the biographer, in prosecuting his work, is not thrown upon his own resources. It is only with regard to the earlier incidents of the life, and the first developments of the mind and genius of his son, that the father is compelled to rely on the recollections fondly cherished in the family. Beyond these incipient stages Of boyhood and youth, there are abundant materials among the manuscripts of the deceased, which only require to be faithfully arranged and presented, to give a fair transcript of his history. With regard to the use Of these materials, however, it must be understood that no greater latitude can be allowed than may be found necessary for the full illustration of his life and character. Harry Croswell, the seventh child of Caleb Croswell and his wife, Hannah Kellogg, was born on June 16, 1778 in West Hartford, Connecticut. His father had removed to Connecticut from Charlestown, Massachusetts, before the Revolution.
The boy received his early education from the Rev. Dr. Nathan Perkins, and had for one winter the advantage of being a member of Noah Webster’s household, where he received instruction from Webster in return for his services.
He worked for a little time as a clerk in a country store in Warren, but left there to join an older brother who was in charge of a printing establishment in Catskill, New York. This was more to his liking than clerking, and he made the most of his opportunity. He was soon sending communications to the Catskill Packet, which was printed in the shop, and at the age of twenty-two was made editor of the paper.
He soon moved to Hudson, New York, where he established himself in May 1801 as proprietor of an independent newspaper, the Balance. The town had at this time a Republican paper, the Bee, for whose sting the local Federalists sought an antidote.
His caustic pen very soon involved him in difficulties. The Republicans had just placed as judge in Columbia County one of the leading members of their party; and the law of libel in the state did not require that questions of fact be submitted to the jury. Croswell was indicted for libel. The case was sufficiently challenging to the New York Federalists to bring Alexander Hamilton and William Van Ness to the aid of the young editor, but even Flamilton’s brilliant speech could not change the foregone conclusion of the trial.
Croswell was found guilty, and the publication of the Wasp was discontinued. Croswell issued the Balance as a Federalist paper in Hudson until 1809 when encouraged by promises of Federalist support he removed with it to Albany. Promises failed, debts accumulated, and he was jailed by a Federalist creditor.
He thereupon gave up his career as a journalist and turned to the ministry for refuge from the ingratitude and uncertainties of the political world.
He was ordained deacon in the Episcopal Church, May 8, 1814.
Flis first charge was Christ Church in Hudson, New York, where he remained only a few months.
On January 1, 1815, he was installed as rector of Trinity Church in New Haven, Connecticut. Here he passed the remainder of his life contentedly, in the faithful performance of his pastoral duties.
