Career
He then volunteered for service with the Canadian Army during World War I.
After the war, he was elected to the Canadian House of Commons as a Progressive Member of Parliament representing Portage la Prairie, Manitoba in the 1921 federal election defeating Prime Minister Arthur Meighen by almost 200 votes. He was defeated by Meighen when he stood for re-election in 1925. Leader returned to parliament as a Liberal Member of Parliament in the 1935 federal election.
He was re-elected in 1940 and 1945 before dying in office in 1946.
