Harry Smith earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Texas in 1950, a Bachelor of Divinity from Yale University in 1953, and a doctorate from Drew University in 1965.
During the late 1950s and 1960s, Harry Smith was a campus pastor at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and served there from 1968 to 1969 as chancellor for residential college development. He was an associate professor of religion in higher education at Yale Divinity School and than became the president of Austin College in 1978. Smith left Austin College with a new image for the future in a newly designed logo reflective of its Texas pioneer heritage and enduring spirit.
