Left Charterhouse, became Barrister of Supreme Court of New Zealand. Was elected a member of the Wellington City Council, being then 22 years of age and the youngest councillor in the colony. In 1893 stood for New Zealand Parliament, contesting city of Wellington.
Was defeated, but immediately afterwards was elected to the Licensing Committee. Came to England in 1894. Entered into journalism, and until appointment to The People, was the acting editor of the Royal Magazine.
Editor of The People to 1900. Member Loudon Stock Exchange, 1900-1910. Manager of the Anglo-French Mercantile and Finance Corporation, Limited; formerly Prime Minister of New Zealand.

Motoring and cricket in summer. Won the Spencer Cup for Charterhouse in 1885 at Wimbledon.
