Appointed to the United States Naval Academy from Illinois, 1870, graduate 1875.

Promoted midshipman, June 21, 1875. Ensign, July 11, 1877. Junior grade, August 24, 1883.

Lieutenant, September 9, 1889. Lieutenant-commander, March 3, 1899. Commander, August 24, 1904.

Retired voluntarily as captain, June 30, 1905.
