Gazetted 2nd Lieutenant R.E. 1895. Lieutenant 189S; Captain 1904. Served through South African War as Stall Officer to Assistant-Director of Railways, and afterwards Deputy Assistant-Director of Railways and D.A.D.R. Armoured Trains, Kim berley lino (despatches, Queen’s medal with clasp, King's medal, 2 clasps, Companion of the Distinguished Service Order). Companion of the Distinguished Service Order 1902; employed on construction of Baro-Kano Railway.
