Hartwig Isernhagen studied at the University of Freiburg where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1966 and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1969. He did his postdoctoral studies at the Julius Maximilian University of Würzburg.
Hartwig Isernhagen started his career as a faculty member at the University of Regensburg. He held this post until 1972 and took up a post of an assistant professor at the Julius Maximilian University. He also worked as a visiting professor at the University of Texas. In 1981 he was promoted to professorship and worked until his retirement in 2004. He wrote his first book, Sensation, Vision And Imagination: The Problem Of Unity In Lawrence Durrell’s Novels, in 1969. One of his last books was published in 2009.
Hartwig Isernhagen is a member of the Swiss Association of University Teachers of English, Swiss Association of American Studies and European Association of American Studies. Isernhagen is also a fellow of American Council of Learned Societies.
Hartwig Wolf Ernst Isernhagen married Karin Hulck on July 19, 1969. The marriage produced a daughter.
