Harumachi Koikawa resided at Koishikawa, Edo, where he published his first attempt at fiction writing. The book titled "Kibydshi" (Yellow Cover Fiction) was also illustrated by him. He won real aistinction with Kinkin Sensei Eigono-Yume (Mr. Kinkin’s Dreams of Glory) (1776). Later he took to himself the name of Sakenoue-no-Furachi, under which he wrote comic waka poetry.
Koikawa's works attracted the negative attention of the authorities, however, and he received a summons in 1789 to appear before Matsudaira Sadanobu. Though official reports indicate he died of illness, it was widely rumored that he was ordered to commit suicide for his writings.
