Harunari Tokugawa

Background

Harunari was born in 1751. He was the fourth son of Munetada Hitotsubashi.

Career

Harunari Tokugawa succeeded to fiefdom in 1764, then he was granted fief of 30,000 koku of rice in Totomi Province (Shizuoka Prefecture) in 1786. In 1793 he resigned and entered priesthood under name of Bokuo.

His eldest son Ienari became eleventh Shogun. Accordingly he came to acquire great influence in the Shogunate and took active part in politics.
