Fondiller received his education in his native city, earning a BA (1940) and an MFA (1962) from Columbia University.
Since 1971 he has been a contributing editor and critic for Popular Photography, where he started working as an associate editor and movie/ video editor. Previously, he was hired as a staff writer for the National Broadcasting Company (1955-60), an associate editor for U.S. Camera magazine (1948-49) and a writer-photographer for the U.S. Army Berlin District (1946). In addition, he has been involved in teaching in New York City at City University of New York (1974- 78), New School for Social Research (1972-73) and Columbia University School of the Arts (1971-72).
His achievements also include 70 film segments made for NBC-TV (1953-54) and a 16mm film, Audubon the Naturalist which he directed for the Photo Library (1955).
Fondiller belongs to SPE and to the Historical Society of New York, for which he served on the board of directors ( 1972—79) and was nominated a fellow (1978).
