Mr. Huang was born in Hankou, Hubei, China, in 1888.

He received his early education in the Hankou schools. Mr. Huang went to Boone University (later known as Huachung University), Wuchang and received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1911. He went to America and took graduate courses in the General and Union Theological Seminaries, New York City, and received his Master of Arts and Bachelor of Sacred Theology degrees. In the meantime he was curate at Grace Church, New York City. He took graduate work at Cambridge (Massachusetts) Theological School, Harvard Divinity School and Harvard School of Education and received his Bachelor of Divine degree.
Mr. Hu recived an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from the University of South Tennessee in 1929.
Huang Harvey F. D. worked as a rector of St. John's Church, Hankou, from 1911 to 1921. He returned from America in 1928 and became rector of St. Paul's Cathedral in Hankou. Mr. Hu served as an examining chaplain to the Bishop of Hankou from 1923. He was also a secretary of the Diocesan Standing Committee and chairman of the Diocesan Board of Finance. Huang Harvey F. D. was a member of the Diocesan Council, Five-year Movement Committee, standing committee of the Chung Hwa Shen Kung Hui and board member of the Central China College. He also was a member of the standing committee of the National Y.M.C.A. Mr. Hu was appointed principal of the St. Louis Girls' High School. Later he became a principal of St. Phoebe's School for the Training of Bible Women.
