COX, Hawtrey was born on April 23, 1861. Son of late Major-General Sir John Hamilton Cox, Baronet, Companion of the Bath, Gordon Highlanders. Succeeded father 1878, who succeeded his kinsman and 1st cousin Sir Francis Hawtrey Cox, 12th Baronet, 1873, in whose father’s (the Reverend Richard Cox, who was father of the 10th, 11th, and 12th Baronets) house Sir John was born and by him baptized.
Education
Studied at Dulwich College.
Career
Served in Zululand, 1884. Bechuanaland Expedition, 1884-1885. Zululand Rebellion, 1888.
Was employed under the Russian Government on the Survey Staff of the Southern Division of the Chinese Eastern Railway with headquarters at Port Arthur, 1898-1900. Took part in the Defence of Newellwang. Subsequently served in the Chinese Expedition as a volunteer with the Tientsin Defence Force.
Afterwards commanding a Regiment of Chinese Mounted Militia under the Russian military authorities in Manchuria. 14th Baronet, cartulary-register 1700; formerly Captain Otli Inniskilling Dragoons; latterly Honourable Major 4lli Battalion Royal Irish Rifles.
