Hazan Itaya was born in 1872 in Shimodate, Ibaraki Prefecture, originally named Itaya Kashichi. His father was a soya sauce maker, and he was the youngest of eight children.

After graduating from Tokyo Academy of Fine Arts, Hazan Itaya became a teacher at Ishikawa Technical School, later built a kiln and manufactured pottery and other cera-mics (1905).
