Hazel V. Carby is a British-born professor of African American Studies and of American Studies at Yale University. Dr. Carby is considered a pioneer in black feminism and is also known as one of the world’s leading scholars on race, gender, and African-American issues.
Background
Hazel V. Carby was born on January 15, 1948 in Oakhamton, Devon, United Kingdom. Daughter of Carlin Colin and Iris Muriel Carby. As a young child, Carby showed a talent for ballet. She won a scholarship to a ballet school, and trained to become a professional dancer from the ages of four to seventeen. During her drama classes at school, however, she developed an interest in reading. Eventually, Carby decided to study literature rather than pursue a career as a dancer.
Education
Hazel earned a degree in Portsmouth Polytechnic in 1970, then a PGCE in 1972, at the institute of Education, London University. Then studied at Birmingham University Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies where she gained a M.A in 1979 and a Ph.D in 1984.
Career
Hazel teached at high school from 1972 to 1979. Then she was an associate professor and taught English at Wesleyan University, Middletown from 1982 till 1989. Since 1989 she has been a professor of African American studies at Yale University, New Haven. She currently teaches courses on issues of race, gender and sexuality through the culture and literature of the Caribbean and its Diaspora; through transnational and postcolonial literature and theory; through representations of the black female body; and through the genres of science fiction.
