Studied ukiyoe, or genre pictures, under Kuniyoshi Utagawa and later painting of the Kano school. Before that, he had been Dutch paintings in Nagasaki and had resolved to learn Western painting by himself. He practised it for seven years and won reputation in Yokohama, where a Swiss artist recognized his merits.
In 1885, he bequeathed his name of Horyu to one of his disciples and went to the United States. He returned to Japan shortly before his death.
