During his childhood he lived some time outside of Hong Kong, and attended Saint Paul"s College, Hong Kong. He was a popular Chinese jazz musician during the New Culture Movement of the 1920s and 1930s in China. His later career was focused on Cantonese folk music

In the People"s Republic of China, he is celebrated by the Revolutionary Committee of the Kuomintang for his participation in the Second United Front between the Chinese Nationalist Party and the Communist Party of China against Japanese invaders during the Second Sino-Japanese War.
