Héctor Alterio began his acting career in theatre, making his stage debut in 1948. He became a prominent figure in Argentine cinema and theatre during the 1960s, also co-founding the Nuevo Teatro company, which contributed to the development of modern Argentine stage production.
In 1975, shortly before the onset of Argentina’s military dictatorship, Alterio went into exile in Spain after receiving death threats from the Argentine Anti-Communist Alliance (Triple A). In Spain, he continued his acting career and established a long-standing presence in Spanish cinema.
Throughout his career, he appeared in numerous films across Argentina and Spain, including La tregua (1974), La Patagonia rebelde (1974), La historia oficial (1985), Camila (1984), El hijo de la novia (2001), and Plata quemada. Several of these films were nominated for or received Academy Awards, with La historia oficial winning the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.
Alterio also received critical recognition for his performance in A un dios desconocido, for which he won Best Actor at the San Sebastián International Film Festival. Alongside his film work, he remained deeply committed to theatre, including long-running stage projects such as the one-man show Como hace 300 años, which he performed for more than 25 years.
He remained professionally active throughout his life, continuing to perform in theatre and screen productions into his later years.
