Educated by private tutors and at Boys’ High School, Philadelphia, and later in various scientific and law schools.
Admitted to practice in company courts in Philadelphia, 1870, to Supreme Court of the Pennsylvania, 1872. Later to federal courts and in 1881 to Supreme Court of the United States. Partner with late Furman Sheppard in practice of law, 1870-1880.
From 1885 has given special attention to federal court practice, especially copyright and patent causes.
Member Franklin Institute Was active in politics and chairman various political organizations, 1875-1885.
