Heihachi Tanaka was born in 1834 in Shinano, Nagano Prefecture.
Heihachi Tanaka began life early as an apprentice in a shop. He then became a fishmonger (1848), peddling his wares between his home town and Aichi Prefecture.
When the port of Yokohama was thrown open to foreign trade he sold raw silk and tea to foreign traders. He was running an exchange business by 1865 and amassed a fortune.
Heihachi Tanaka established a rice-exchange depot (1873) and became its director, and later founded Tokyo Kabuto-cho rice exchange, and then the No. 112 National Bank. By 1882 he had amalgamated the Kabuto-cho rice exchange with another at Kakigara-cho-, and became director of the joint firm. He also founded the Tanaka Bank.
He married the daughter of Yasube Tanaka (1852).
