Heimo Zobernig was born in 1958, in Mauthen, Karnten, Austria.
Zobernig attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna in the late 1970s and graduated from the Academy of Applied Arts in Vienna in 1983.
After two visiting professorships in Germany, Zobernig began his teaching career at the Academy of Fine Art in Vienna since 1999. Zobernig has mined various art historical moments and movements, specifically Modernism, post-Modernism, Geometric Abstraction and Minimalism, with a rigorous and interrogatory spirit. His often playful approach also includes a keen and abiding affinity with modes of display, set design and theatricality.
The artist has had numerous international exhibitions, among them Heimo Zobernig, Sammlung Grässlin, Kunstraum, St. Georgen; La Biennale di Venezia; MUDAM, Luxembourg; Palacio de Veláquez, Museo Reina Sofia, Madrid; Musée d’art contemporain, Bordeaux; Museum of Modern Art, Vienna; and his work has been featured in group exhibitions at the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart; the Kunstmuseum Basel; Centre Pompidou; Tate St Ives; and Galleria Civica di Modena.
Heimo Zobernig has explored modernist ideas like Minimalism, the grid, and color theory. The artist's sculptures, videos, and installations similarly show a playful use of space and color. Zobernig blends elements of Minimalism with expressive brushstrokes, geometry, or typography while retaining an emphasis kept on the grid and the monochrome.
Quotations: “There are moments when I really enjoy being an artist, but I also appreciate those moments when I completely forget about it.”
