Background

Heinrich Schonfeld was born on March 23, 1609 in Biberach an der Riss, Germany. The son of Johann Baptist Schonfeld, a goldsmith.

Education

Schonfeld was a pupil of Johann Caspar Sichelbein in Memmingen, Germany.

Career

Schönfeld travelled to Italy in 1633 and lived in Rome, then lived in Naples until about 1649. In Italy he was known for religious works in Sta Elisabetta di Fornari and in Palazzo Orsini.

In 1651 he returned to Biberach, Germany, and from 1652 Schönfeld lived and worked in Augsburg, Germany. In the following years numerous paintings were made in many southern German churches.

Besides, Schönfeld painted mythological and genre scenes in addition to paintings with religious content.

Achievements

Schonfeld was considered the most important German Baroque painter in the second half of the 17th century. His best known paintings were "The robbery of the Sabine women", "Solomon is anointed king by the priest Zadok" and "Treasure Tombs in Roman Ruins".
