Schonfeld was a pupil of Johann Caspar Sichelbein in Memmingen, Germany.
Schönfeld travelled to Italy in 1633 and lived in Rome, then lived in Naples until about 1649. In Italy he was known for religious works in Sta Elisabetta di Fornari and in Palazzo Orsini.
In 1651 he returned to Biberach, Germany, and from 1652 Schönfeld lived and worked in Augsburg, Germany. In the following years numerous paintings were made in many southern German churches.
Besides, Schönfeld painted mythological and genre scenes in addition to paintings with religious content.
