He died in 1971. In 1997, a previously unknown species of amphibian tree frogs was discovered in the Mamilla Pool. The researchers, led by Yehudah L. Werner, named their find Hyla heinzsteinitzi (Hebrew: אילנית היינץ-שטייניץ), in honor of Steinitz. Additional animal species named after Heinz Steinitz include Rubratella steinitzi (Pawlowski & Lee, 1991).
