Career
The Knight"s Cross of the Iron Cross was awarded to recognise extreme battlefield bravery or successful military leadership. Trautwein was killed in action on 1 November 1944 when his submarine chaser (U-Jäger) UJ-202 was attacked and destroyed by HMS Avon Vale and HMS Wheatland. Iron Cross (1939) Bibliography.
