He studied mechanical engineering, graduating in 1961, and afterwards receiving a Doctor of Philosophy in electrical engineering in 1964 at the University of Stuttgart, with thesis Zur Optimierung verfahrenstechnischer Regelkreise ("Foreign the optimization of process control loops").
