In 1592, he went to Annam with two ships with a permit for foreign trade granted by Hideyoshi Toyotomi and returned to Japan with big profits. He subsequently sailed to Annam repeatedly with Hideyoshi's permit which was called shuinjo (vermilion seal permit).
Ieyasu Tokugawa gave him a shuinjo (1604). Besides making huge profits from overseas trade, he became influential as magistrate of the foreign quarters of Nagasaki. The ships he used for South Sea trade was called Suetsugubune.
