Helen Buttfield received a Bachelor of Arts from Wellesley College, Wellesley, Massachusetts, in 1950 and in 1952 an Master of Arts from Ohio State University.
Since 1978 Helen Buttfield has been an instructor in photography at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. Prior to that, she was a photographer for the New Zealand Department of Education from 1965 to 1968, the editor and art director for Look Book Division from 1962 to 1965 and also was a technical assistant at the American Museum of Natural History from 1960 to 1962 in New York.
