Helen Chryssides was born in England but immigrated to Australia in 1980.
The author has lived in Australia since 1980, when she moved to the Northern Territory. Subsequently she practiced dentistry in Darwin and Alice Springs. When Chryssides moved to South Australia, she became a freelance writer and journalist. Helen has written two books that explore different perspectives on living in Australia. The first of these, "Local Heroes", chronicles the lives of several Aborigines who have become role models for their people. The ten “local heroes” have careers in politics, Aborigine activism, sports, the arts, law, education, and social work.
Chryssides’s second book, "A Different Light: Ways of Being Australian", examines the lives of eleven people who came to live in Australia from other parts of the world. These individuals resemble each other — and the subjects of "Local Heroes" - in that they are now prominent citizens who are highly successful in their professions. They come from a variety of ethnic backgrounds, but as Australian Book Review critic Sue Murray pointed out, “all have accepted the challenge of beginning life in another country facing, in varying degrees, the difficulties of language, racism, poverty, and loneliness while accepting the severance of family and cultural ties.” For each, Australia was a place where they could pursue a dream, and where there were fewer political or economic constraints than in their homeland.
Presumably motivated by her own experiences as an immigrant, Chryssides interviewed a journalist, a television personality, two writers, two photographers, an oceanographer, and a trio of opera singers in preparation for her novel. The book, which is divided into eight sections, was described by Murray as providing “no deep, psychological probing either of the individual subjects or of the problematics of immigration.” She has also published a book titled "Your Home Business" in 1997.
